I have been curious about this bakeshop since I saw it being constructed. I pass by it everytime I go back to the office from the site. When I finally saw that it was open, I did not miss the opportunity to visit it. On my first time to check out the shop, I forgot that I did not have enough mullah so I just window-shopped. The goodies looked promising so I told myself that I would go back.
The next time I had the chance to visit it, I made sure that I would be able to buy some goodies. I bought 3 cakes that day. My choices were Prune Cake, Nelusko and Cookie Monster(I only bought a slice of each, lest I want my sugar levels to spike up!) I also shared the cakes with my hubby, SIL and MIL.
The verdict?
Prune Cake:
Butter cake studded with Prune bits enveloped in Prune Buttercream.
We all thought that that the Prune Cake lacked flavor and the cake was too dense for us. The buttercream lacked the "prune-ness" that we were looking for. Maybe the cake was sitting in the fridge for quite some time thus the lack in flavor.
The Nelusko cake:
2 layer Mocha Sponge Cake with Mocha Buttercream filling and toffee bits covered in the same buttercream topped with toffee bits.
We liked the cake. It was soft and the buttercream was not too sweet, same with the toffee. It was like eating a cake version of Violet Crumble=)
Cookie Monster:
2-Layer Chocolate Moist Cake with Custard Filling covered in sticky gooey chocolatey fudge icing.
This was the winner!!!! We liked that the cake was not too sweet, even the custard. The cake was moist and chocolatey. The custard had the right sweetness. The icing was ohh-so good! Chocolatey and fudgey at the same time. I was in heaven after the first bite=)
On the next visit, I bought 2 slices of Cookie Monster. One for me and one for Hubby. We did not want to share a slice 'coz it was not enough for the both of us. hehehe=) I also bought a slice of Coffee Cake. At first, the lady in the counter was hesitant to sell me a slice because only the whole cake was on display, except for the one included in their Super Sampler(a slice of all the cakes available). The lady was kind enough to accomodate my request by giving me the slice that was included in the Super Sampler=) Talk about pleasing your customers=)
The coffee Cake was good too! 3 layers of Sponge cake with coffee buttercream filling, enrobed in more coffee buttercream topped with lots of toffee bits. The cake was soft and tasty. The buttercream had just the right amount of coffee taste, not too bitter but not lacking in flavor.
The shop is originally from Butuan City and I read about it from another blog, Eating Asia. He wrote about the Sans Rival that the shop also makes. So I was happy when I learned that it was the same shop.
I visited the shop again and I learned that it belonged to the Calo family, one of the kin is a batchmate from college. So nice for them to bring their goodies to Davao=) Next in my list of must-try is the Sans Rival. I will do that soon. I just have to check my blood sugar levels and weight again unless I want to hear another sermon from my OB again. hehehe=)

PS. I'm sorry but the photos don't do justice to the goodies. I suggest that you do visit the shop to see and taste them for yourself=)Oh, I forgot, do check out their decors, especially the lighting fixtures. It's way too cool. I want one for myself.
